Joel Chaiken tutored my son, M, in math during his junior year in high school. I was very impressed by Joel's kind, thoughtful and analytical tutoring style, and by the quality of instructional support he was able to provide. He patiently encouraged M, a classically math-averse student who also suffers from ADHD, to consider new approaches to math problems, giving him both the skills and the confidence to tackle - and to overcome - the math challenges he was facing.

At the time, I used to joke that it was only thanks to Joel that M was a high school graduate. But really, it was no joke. Joel opened doors to understanding and success in high school, in college and beyond, and I am still grateful to him for his superb tutoring.

This story has a remarkable postscript. Last year, M was an assistant fourth grade teacher at the International School of Dakar in Senegal. Part of his responsibility was to provide one-on-one tutoring to struggling students in his class. He was so successful as a math tutor that at the end of the year, the students voted to recognize him with the title of "Math Wizard." This honor speaks to the skills he learned from Joel: patience, respect for the individual child's needs, and an understanding of how to most effectively convey the principles and processes of math.

I remain grateful for Joel's caring and competence and highly recommend him as a math tutor.

Joel Chaiken did an excellent job of tutoring our son in math when he was in 9th Grade at Bronx High School of Science. He had a difficult teacher and was struggling to grasp the concepts.  He worked with Joel through much of the year and passed the class with excellent grades and a firm understanding of the subject matter.  By the next year he was able to continue in math without additional help.

Joel Chaiken tutored my son in math during all 4 years of his time at Archbishop Stepinac High. Math does not come easily to my son, but Joel was able to explain difficult math concepts to my son in such a way that he could grasp these concepts, and apply them successfully to homework and tests. Due to the one on one interactions between Joel and my son during their tutoring sessions, Joel could explain math concepts to my son, in a way that his teacher, with 30 students in a classroom, could not.
My son was also a varsity athlete at Stepinac, as well as playing on a club team year round.  Yet, Joel was always extremely flexible and understanding in terms of our arranging for tutoring sessions with him to help with my son’s math homework and to prepare him for math tests.
With Joel’s help, my son was not only able to pass all of his math classes at Stepinac, he was admitted in to the National Math Honor Society, based upon his excellent grades.   
I highly recommend Joel as a tutor for any student that needs help with math.

 Joel is a wonderful math tutor and really more of an educational consultant, working hard to assess the child’s needs and to tailor a customized program.
